Along with genealogy, I love crafting. Even though I’m a pretty good cross stitcher, I haven’t tried my hand at embroidering anything yet.
But these family tree embroidery designs are inspiring me to want to give it a try!
For me, crafting is a great way to decompress and relax at home. Crafts like cross stitch and embroidery are very meditative.
And of course, what better way is there to spend our time at home than to create a future heirloom?

A Quick History of Embroidery
Embroidery – the craft of embellishing fabric with thread – likely started in the Near East. Some examples by the Scythians have been found going back to the 5th to 3rd century B.C.
Cultures from around the world have practiced the art of embroidery, but it historically has been practiced by girls and women. In the US in the 1700s, samplers were a common way to teach girls both embroidery and the alphabet and numbers. It was also a way of preparing girls as young as five on their future role of making clothes and linens for her future husband and children. Maybe your family has one of these heirlooms!
In the early 1900s, patterns and mail-order catalogs helped make embroidery more mainstream. It became even more common with the invention of the first embroidery machine in 1832. Today’s computerized embroidery machines have a lot of features and can make complicated designs.
